Short answer
Where to find it and where to use it
The key is a random drop from searchable containers. It is not sitting somewhere fixed, and no route guarantees one. It does show up more often in a few places:
- Residential POIs: Ruby Residence and Pale Apartments, specifically the drawers and cabinets rather than the loose shelves.
- Research and Administration itself: The desk drawers, especially on the second floor. It is common to find the key one floor above the door it opens.
- Off other raiders: Anyone who found one before you is carrying it.
- The quest The Stench of Corruption: It hands over one key, which is the only reliable way to plan a staff room run in advance.
Being uncommon rather than rare or epic, this is the Dam key you will see most often. If you are running the map regularly you will accumulate them faster than you burn them.
What it unlocks
The in game text just calls it "a key to the staff room in The Dam." The door itself is on the ground floor of the Research and Administration building, the structure joined to the Control Tower at the middle of the map, which is why our map marker sits at that cluster.
Two ways in, depending on how you are approaching:
- The west side entrance. The staff room door is essentially opposite it, straight ahead as you come through.
- Through the main lobby. From the large central room with the front desk, take the hallway to the left of the desk. The staff room door is on your right.
Watch the approach. There is a security camera on the outside of the building and an alarm just inside the door, and ARCs patrol the interior. Deal with the camera before you commit, or you will be looting with company on the way.
What is inside
For an uncommon key, the contents punch far above the rarity tier:
- Multiple red valuables lockers
- A Security Breach locker, which the Control Tower room does not have
- Loose loot spawns across the room
Reported hauls run in the 60,000 to 70,000 coin range on a good roll. Documented pulls include weapon attachments, a Raider Hatch Key, a Jolt Mine blueprint, medical supplies, a Snap Hook and epic tier items like a Photoelectric Cloak and a Deadline Mine. That is Control Tower money out of a room gated behind a key you will find three times as often.
Is it worth the detour
This is the highest value to effort ratio on Dam Battlegrounds, and it is the key we would tell a new Dam runner to prioritise.
- Cheap to obtain: Uncommon, so you will find them.
- Central location: Research and Administration sits in the middle of the map, so it fits almost any route rather than forcing a dedicated trip.
- Multiple exits: Unlike the Control Tower room, you are on a ground floor with real escape options if a fight starts.
- Stacks with the tower run: The two doors are in the same cluster, so carrying both keys turns one trip into two rooms.
The risk is the neighbourhood, not the room. The center of Dam Battlegrounds is where players naturally collide, and the alarm inside the door advertises that someone is looting. Clear the room fast, then move rather than sitting on the pile. With a 30 minute raid timer and extractions at Water Treatment, Swampside Elevator, Red Lakes Balcony Lift and North Complex Elevator, you have room to be patient about the exit but not about the looting.
How keys work in Arc Raiders
The mechanics are the same for every key in Arc Raiders, and they decide whether a key run is worth starting.
- Single use. The key is consumed when the door opens. One key, one door, no exceptions.
- Lost on death. Unless it is sitting in your Safe Pocket, the key drops with the rest of your kit. Bank it immediately.
- Rooms reset between raids. The staff room refills every time, so this is a repeatable route as long as keys keep dropping.
- Keys come from containers and from bodies. Cabinets, drawers, desks and lockers roll for them, and a raider heading for extraction may well be carrying one.
The key itself weighs 0.25 and sells for 100 coins. Selling one is almost always a mistake when the room behind it is worth hundreds of times that.
